Sciatica & Pregnancy

Today a woman asked me if being pregnant sentences her to live with sciatica. Is this nerve pain inevitable and must women simply “deal with it”?

I told her what I’ve told countless women. That sciatic nerve pain is common but not normal. Pain is the body’s way of indicating that something is wrong.
Sciatica can be caused by a disc in your spine pressing and irritating the nerve. It can also be irritated by a tight muscle. That’s where neuromuscular massage helps. If the root cause is muscular you can be pregnant and be pain free. To feel heavy and uncomfortable is unavoidable. To live in pain while you’re expecting your child is not.
